Benin Broze figures served as royal ornaments and are the indigenous cultural art of the Benin people in Edo State, Nigeria, dating back to the 13th to 16th centuries. Bronze casting in Edo was established in the 14th century. The bronze surfaces are designed to highlight contrasts between light and metal. Many of the heads have exaggerated proportions, with large ears, noses and lips, which are shaped wtih great care.
