Kokeshi are simple wooden toys that have been crafted for more than 150 years in the Tohoki-chiho region of north-east Japan. They are also traditionally used as symbols of hope for bountiful harvests or prayers for good luck and fortune. They are made from a variety of different woods from the lighter white dogwood or mizuki to cherrywood, camellia and maple.
