Lucas Price, Cat's Heads

Lucas Price, perhaps best-known as Cyclops of the Burning Candy crew, was excluded from school in London due to his early experiments in graffiti, he moved to Manchester and plunged into a fringe existence coloured by addiction.

Funding this lifestyle via forgery, Price spent time in prison and was generally of no fixed abode. Emerging ten years later, he found himself energised by the growing street art network and founded London's Burning Candy crew. His work appeared at Tate Modern in 2008 and has had work sold through Bonhams auctioneers. An appearance in Exit Through the Gift Shop, at Banksy's request, ended in an arrest that can be seen in the Oscar-nominated documentary.

Price's work helped him become one of the few artists with no formal training to ever be admitted into Royal College of Arts MFA painting course (other graduates include Lucian Freud and Chris Ofili), where he completed a master's degree.

He now works from his studio in east London and his art has evolved considerably since his days as a stalwart of London's Burning Candy graffiti crew. His new work fuses Baroque-era portraiture with late Renaissance vanitas paintings, exploring the relationship between language and visual culture, and the power of art as a fundamental tool of communication.
