By the early 1960's he was appointed Vice Principal of the Nottingham College of Art and by the time he retired, he was Principal at Portsmouth College of Art.
His work was exhibited throughout the country including the Royal Academy, Victoria & Albert Museum, Whitechapel Art Gallery, National Maritime Museum

POWELL John A. 1911-2003, born in Nottingham. Following an apprenticeship as a lithographic artist, he attended Nottingham School of Art, 1932-35 where his teachers included Arthur Spooner whom he was later to assist. After winning a Scholarship to the Royal College of Art, 1935-39 he taught drawing and painting at Cheam and later at Manchester School of Art.
By the early 1960's he was appointed Vice Principal of the Nottingham College of Art and by the time he retired, he was Principal at Portsmouth College of Art. His work was exhibited throughout the country including the Royal Academy, Victoria & Albert Museum, Whitechapel Art Gallery, National Maritime Museum, RBA, New English Art Club, RSMA, RWA, Nottingham Society of Artists and the RI. His paintings are in the public collections of Bristol Education Authority and Manchester Education Authority.
In 1983, he had a solo exhibition at the Arts Centre, Salisbury. He has also shown at the Parkin Gallery, London, Beaux Arts Bath, Victoria Art Gallery, Bath and the Swindon Art Gallery.
