More Info

Ernest Griest Knight was born on 24 March and named after his grandfather, a renowned artist. He trained to become an artist at Chelsea College of Art. Before the outbreak of the Second World War, he travelled to South Africa and settled in Johannesburg. During the war, he worked in the South African gold mines.

Returning to England at the end of the war, on the voyage home he met Kit Solkhorn whom he later married and they settled in Northern Rhodesia where Knight took up the post of Principal of the art school at Munali in Lusaka. During this time, Knight became well known for his landscape paintings of the area and in particular the Victoria Falls. The Royal Commonwealth office purchased one of these paintings in the early Fifties.

Knight and his wife returned to England in 1956 and settled in a house overlooking Torbay in Brixham, Devon. For the next several decades, Knight becomes well known for his landscape paintings of Devon and London as well as continental Europe where the couple travel extensively on holiday.
