Ernest Race (1913-1964) was one of the most original and influential British furniture designers, manufacturers and retailers of the 20th century. He was educated at St Paul's School, London and studied interior design at the Bartlett School of Architecture, also in London, from 1932-35. He was employed as a designer with lighting manufacturers Troughton & Young under the direction of A.B. Read and, after studying head-weaving in India in 1937, went on to found Race Fabrics, a textile design firm and shop.
After the Second World War, he went into partnership with J.W. Noel Jordan to found Ernest Race Ltd to design and manufacture his own unique furniture. His best known designs are the BA3 aluminium chair of 1945 and the Antelope, designed for the Festival of Britain in 1951. He was made a Royal Designer for Industry in 1953.
