More Info

Robert Morson Hughes was born in Kent and trained at Lambeth School of Art in London. He became closely associated with the famous Newlyn group of Cornish artists after settling in Lamorna, on the very tip of the Cornish peninsula in 1905, where he attended Forbes School of Painting run by the acclaimed artist Stanhope Forbes. This school was well known for its "especial study of figures in the open air and of animals in their natural environment of landscape".

The St Ives Times reported his work extensively during the 1924 Show Day, his principal picture being the original study for a picture of the rhododendron dell in Kew Gardens, painted for Her Majesty Queen Mary. This depicted a winding path through great masses of colourful bushes; "Mr Hughes was commissioned to paint no less than eight pictures for Her Majesty...He also showed three oils, intended for the RA, one an evening effect in summer over the St Ives Bay, the chief feature of which is the contrast of the patch of warm sand, on which the sun is concentrated, with the intense blue of the sea and the greys of the sky."

Hughes exhibited at the Royal Academy in London from 1910-1938.
