More Info

John Stanton Ward (1917-2007) was a painter and illustrator, born in Hereford. He studied firstly as a fifteen-year-old at Hereford School of Art and at the RCA, 1936-39, returning in 1946 after the war to complete his studies. In October 1939, Ward joined up as a Royal Engineer and later took part in the D-Day landings.

For four years, 1948-52 he worked for Vogue, drawing fashion models, whilst also teaching part-time at Wimbledon School of Art. He was awarded a travelling scholarship which took him to Europe, India, Hong Kong, Turkey and the USA. In 1954 he held his first solo exhibition at Wildenstein's, London, later exhibiting with Maas Gallery and with Hazlitt, Gooden & Fox. Two years later in 1956, he was elected an Associate of the RA and a full member in 1965.

He was an active member of the Royal Academy, serving as Trustee from 1985 to 1993, and it was a great sorrow to him that he felt forced to resign in 1997 over a disagreement with the Academy's artistic policy. He was also a member of the NEAC, PS and a former vice-president of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, which he joined in 1952. In 1982 he was made Hon DLitt of the University of Kent at Canterbury and in 1985 appointed CBE for his services to art. His daughter is the painter Celia Ward.

In 1981 he was commissioned to paint the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales, and he has also made some drawings of the Queen at Balmoral Castle.
