Tropical birds hand carved by Armando, a member of the Warao Indian tribe in the Orinoco Delta, Venezuela, from tropical softwood, probably balsa wood.
The Warao are an indigenous Amerindian people inhabiting northeastern Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, and Suriname. The term Warao translates as "the boat people," after the Warao's lifelong and intimate connection to the water. Most of the approximately 20,000 Warao inhabit Venezuela's Orinoco Delta region.
