Traditional Gurage room divider or house post from Ethiopia. House posts like these had both a functional and decorative purpose. They were used in a traditional Gurage dwelling as a welcoming and protective symbol. The circular head on top of the post was a common symbol of protection throught the region. The practical function of this post was to act as a marker to separate areas inside the house. It would have been positioned in a line alongside other posts of similar height.
