Native American, Pacific Northwest, British Columbia Canada, Kwakiuti people, mid-20th century hand carved wooden mat or trivet. Signed on the reverse. According to Kwakiuti legend, killer whales were the physical manifestations of the sould of open-water marine hunters who perished or were lost at sea.
