Portuguese Tile Watercolours

Jane Wallis (BA, ACR) is a local freelance works of art conservator having spent 15 years working at The Royal Collection, specialising in decorative surfaces. In her spare time she records and replicates the beauty and intricacy of Portuguese architectural tiles in watercolour, sometimes as a single tile, as a set of four, or as a montage in colourful arrangements.

Jane’s inspiration came about through spending lockdown in Portugal when she started recording and arranging their elaborate and geometric patterns on paper. Her long held passion for ‘Azulejos’ began from exploring and discovering antique tile murals tucked away in Portuguese churches, private estates or adorning municipal buildings such as railway stations and marketplaces.

In 2004, whilst studying for her degree in Conservation and Restoration at the City & Guilds of London Art School, Jane spent three weeks as a student intern at the National Tile Museum in Lisbon, to gain knowledge and practical experience in tile conservation and restoration for her degree thesis on the subject.
