Marius Bauer (Dutch, 1867-1932), Cavalcade in front of a Mosque, 1913, etching on paper, framed 53 x 72 cm.
A rich, tonal impression printed on cream laid paper. Signed bottom right and numbered (29) in pencil, image size: 59.5 x 43.3 cm.
In 1888, Bauer made a trip to Istanbul, financed by his art dealer Van Wisselingh & Co., and decided to make Orientalism his principal subject. Making numerous further trips to Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, India, Ceylon, and the Dutch East Indies, sketching and collecting items for Van Wisselingh.

Marius Bauer was a painter, draughtsman, etcher and lithographer typically of Oriental and Orientalising subject matter. Born in The Hague in 1867. Trained in The Hague.
Bauer travelled to Constantinople in 1886, later to Egypt, Palestine, India, Dutch Indies, France, Spain, Turkey and Russia until 1931. Member of 'Arti et Amicitiae' in Amsterdam, since 1886 of 'Pulchri Studio' and since 1888 of 'De Nederlandsche Etsclub'.
Bauer won many prizes and awards, for example in Antwerp, Amsterdam, Paris, Munich, Berlin, St Louis (US), Brussels and San Francisco, and he was knighted in The Netherlands in 1900, 1906 and 1927. He was much exhibited in London and other parts of Europe during his lifetime. He died in Amsterdam in 1932.
