Born in Tonbridge, Kent, Mackley trained as an art teacher at Goldsmiths specializing in painting and etching. His book "Wood Engraving", published in 1948, remains one of the leading manulas on the engraver's technique and has solidified Mackley's reputation as one of the finest wood engravers of his generation.
